Paralyzed dad learns to walk, talk again by mimicking baby daughter
A YOUNG dad who became trapped in his own body after a stroke has learnt to walk and talk again - by copying his BABY DAUGHTER.
Mark Ellis was just 22 when he suffered a stroke and developed locked-in syndrome - a nightmarish condition which leaves the sufferer’s brain alert but their body paralysed.
The sudden stroke in August 2010 left him completely helpless, forcing him to communicate by just rolling his eyes.
A previously fit and healthy young man, doctors induced him into a coma and told his shocked family it was unlikely he would survive.
His devastated wife Amy, 32, had given birth to their daughter Lola-Rose just two weeks earlier.
But eight months after later, Mark amazed doctors when he left hospital and began learning to talk, move and walk again – by mimicking his baby daughter.
Amy said: “It’s amazing that they have learned to do things together and now Mark can talk and walk with the use of a frame.
“There wasn’t much time between him and Lola-Rose both taking their first steps - I think Mark took his first steps a week or two after Lola.

Is Chewing Gum the Most Toxic Substance in the Supermarket?

Recently, I asked about thirty women, whose ages were mostly under the age of forty, if they carried chewing gum with them. Twenty seven of the thirty were able to pull out a pack of gum, some even going as far as telling me why they loved a particular brand/flavor of gum.
While this demographic is not representative of all women, 90% of them chewed gum on a daily basis, some consuming more than one stick per day. As with many things that we expose our bodies to on a daily basis, let’s take a moment and analyze the ingredients of chewing gum and ask some important questions that pertain to whether it contributes to good health.
How many of us have looked at the ingredients on a pack of gum?

Harvard Study Confirms Fluoride Reduces Children's IQ

Fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in laboratory animals, including effects on learning and memory…To summarize the available literature, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on increased fluoride exposure in drinking water and neurodevelopmental delays. We specifically targeted studies carried out in rural China that have not been widely disseminated, thus complementing the studies that have been included in previous reviews and risk assessment reports...Findings from our meta-analyses of 27 studies published over 22 years suggest an inverse association between high fluoride exposure and children's intelligence... The results suggest that fluoride may be a developmental neurotoxicant that affects brain development at exposures much below those that can cause toxicity in adults...Serum-fluoride concentrations associated with high intakes from drinking-water may exceed 1 mg/L, or 50 Smol/L, thus more than 1000-times the levels of some other neurotoxicants that cause neurodevelopmental damage. Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES:
To review the effects of chemotherapeutic agents on the blood-brain barrier as related to cytokine release and cognitive impairment.
DATA SOURCES:

DATA SYNTHESIS:
The recent findings that standard doses of chemotherapy agents reach higher than expected levels in the brain and cerebral spinal fluid are being investigated as a potential etiology for the cognitive impairment seen in patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer. Chemotherapy and chemotherapy-related neurotoxicity are associated with the release of proinflammatory cytokines, substances related to sickness behavior (e.g., decreased ability to concentrate). Chemotherapy-related oxidative stress is an additional mechanism hypothesized to induce cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment from chemotherapy is estimated to occur in 17%-75% of patients, and 17%-35% may suffer from long-term effects.
CONCLUSIONS:
Further research is needed to identify the patients most at risk for cognitive impairment from chemotherapy. Prospective studies that evaluate appropriate interventions and control for age, intelligence quotient, education level, hormonal status, fatigue, anxiety, depression, chemotherapy regimen, and genetic status are needed.
IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING:
Changes in cognitive function are associated with significant effects on patients' quality of life. Oncology nurses must be aware of chemotherapy's effects on the brain to appropriately assess and educate patients and their families. In addition, nurses should develop plans of care to prevent or manage chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment after more intervention information is obtained.

New Research Continues to Show Alzheimer’s is a Type 3 Diabetes

Since the FDA has not pulled it off of the market in the US, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed, including one from a whistle blower claiming the manufacturer “is benefiting in tens of billions of dollars in sales at the expense of the lives of people still taking the drug.” Another diabetes drug, Avandia, was removed from pharmacies because it led to increased heart attacks killing thousands of people.

GMOs cause animals to lose their ability to reproduce, Russian scientists discover
(NaturalNews) A study presented at the Days of Defense Against Environmental Hazards in Russia has unveiled once again the implicit dangers associated with the consumption of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). According to Voice of Russia, scientists from the National Association for Gene Security and the Institute of Ecological and Evolutional Problems discovered that animals fed GMOs as part of their normal diet eventually develop the inability to reproduce.
A shocking revelation; the study is one of several that has identified a link between GMO consumption and infertility in recent years. And because it was conducted independently of the biotechnology industry, it came to far different conclusions than have most of the studies offered up for mainstream consumption in defense of GMOs.
Using hamsters as the test subjects, scientists observed that consumption of GM soybeans, which have never been a part of these creatures' normal diets, tended to slow sexual maturity and gradually eliminate the ability to reproduce. After several generations, hamsters consuming the "Frankensoy" eventually lost their innate ability to reproduce.
"We selected several groups of hamsters, kept them in pairs in cells and gave them ordinary food as always," said Dr. Alexei Surov, one of the authors of the study. "We did not add anything for one group but the other was fed with soya that contained no GM components, while the third group with some content of Genetically Modified Organisms and the fourth one with increased amount of GMO."
Dr. Surov and his team then monitored the various groups of cubs, including their rates of growth and birthing frequencies, and compared their findings to the cubs' diets. After several generations of cubs breeding with each other, the team observed that those cubs who ate GMOs as part of their diet eventually became completely sterile.

Chemotherapy can backfire and boost cancer growth: study

Cancer-busting chemotherapy can cause damage to healthy cells which triggers them to secrete a protein that sustains tumour growth and resistance to further treatment, a study said Sunday.
Researchers in the United States made the "completely unexpected" finding while seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body when they are easy to kill in the lab.
They tested the effects of a type of chemotherapy on tissue collected from men with prostate cancer, and found "evidence of DNA damage" in healthy cells after treatment, the scientists wrote in Nature Medicine.
Chemotherapy works by inhibiting reproduction of fast-dividing cells such as those found in tumours.
The scientists found that healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B which boosts cancer cell survival.
"The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected," study co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told AFP.
The protein was taken up by tumour cells neighbouring the damaged cells.
"WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumour cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy," said Nelson.
In cancer treatment, tumours often respond well initially, followed by rapid regrowth and then resistance to further chemotherapy.

Artificial butter flavoring ingredient linked to key Alzheimer’s disease process
A new study raises concern about chronic exposure of workers in industry to a food flavoring ingredient used to produce the distinctive buttery flavor and aroma of microwave popcorn, margarines, snack foods, candy, baked goods, pet foods and other products. It found evidence that the ingredient, diacetyl (DA), intensifies the damaging effects of an abnormal brain protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The study appears in ACS’ journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.
