The new guidelines have received a lot of media attention of the past several days, including criticism from no less than the former president of the American College of Cardiology. I’m happy to see this, because as I will argue in this article, the new guidelines are problematic and would put millions at risk due to unnecessary and prolonged treatment with statin drugs.

Why Ice and Anti-inflammatory Medication is NOT the Answer

This is something I tell my patients, so nice that has put together this article explaining it all. 
 In July I posted a blog discussing the overuse of cryotherapy. The controversy surrounding the topic made it one of the most popular blogs I’ve written. What is surprising to me is that a controversy exists at all. Why, where, and when did this notion of anti-inflammation start? Ice, compression, elevation and NSAIDs are so commonplace that suggesting otherwise is laughable to most. Enter an Athletic Training Room or Physical Therapy Clinic nearly all clients are receiving some type of anti-inflammatory treatment (ice, compression, massage, NSAIDs, biophysical modalities). I evaluated a client the other day and asked what are you doing currently – “Well, I am taking anti-inflammatories and icing.” It makes me scream. Why do you want to get rid of inflammation and swelling? I ask this question for both chronic and acute injury!

Study Calls Into Question Primary Justification for Vaccines

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "Immunity to a disease is achieved through the presence of antibodies to that disease in a person’s system."[i] This, in fact, is the main justification for using vaccines to "boost" immunity, and a primary focus of vaccine research and development. And yet, newly publish research has revealed that in some cases no antibodies are required for immunity against some viruses. Published in the journal Immunity in March, 2011, and titled, "B cell maintenance of subcapsular sinus macrophages protects against a fatal viral infection independent of adaptive immunity," researchers found that mice infected with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) can suffer fatal invasion of their central nervous system even in the presence of high concentrations of "neutralizing" antibodies against VSV.[ii] The researchers found that while B-cells were essential for surviving a systemic VSV infection through the modulation of innate immunity, specifically macrophage behavior, the antibodies they produce as part of the adaptive immune response were "neither needed nor sufficient for protection." These findings, according to the study authors, "…contradict the current view that B cell-derived neutralizing antibodies are absolutely required to survive a primary cytopathic viral infection, such as that caused by VSV."

Women who take statin drugs have 83-143% increased risk of breast cancer

(NaturalNews) New research published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention raises fresh concerns about the safety of statin drugs for high cholesterol, particularly amongst the female population. According to this population-based, case-controlled study, women who take statin drugs appear to have up to a 143 percent increased risk of developing breast cancer compared to women not taking the dangerous drugs.

The study, which involved 2,886 women from the Seattle-Puget Sound region of Washington state, looked at statin drug use among women with several prominent types of breast cancer, as well as control women with no breast cancer. All the women were between the ages of 55 and 74, and researchers questioned them both in-person and using questionnaires to look for a potential relationship between statin drug use and breast cancer prevalence.

Grape Seed Extract Outperforms Chemo in Killing Advanced Cancer Cells

Patients with colorectal cancer may benefit from the cancer-growth-inhibiting power of grape seed extract. Researchers from the University of Colorado Cancer Center report that the more aggressive the cancer cells are, the more effective the grape extract works at targeting and stopping the growth. Study links processed food diet to development of allergies in infants

(http://www.reuters.com)According to a recently published study, infants who consume fresh fruits and vegetables are less likely to develop allergy problems compared to infants who eat processed baby food.

Researchers estimate that as much as 8 percent of children have a food allergy.

In order to prevent food allergies from developing, some parents are recommended to avoid feeding their children certain foods. Kate Grimshaw, lead author of the study and a researcher at the University of Southampton in the UK, expressed concern that parents could be reducing their child's nutritional intake without evidence to support the supposed benefits.

As part of the study, Grimshaw and her team of researchers collected food diaries from 1,140 baby's parents.

The parents typically maintained the diet log for the first year of life, during which, 41 children were diagnosed with a food allergy. The researchers compared the allergic babies to 82 similar infants without an allergy. They then scored the babies' diets based on the combination of foods they ate.

They found that babies without food allergies scored higher than babies with allergies. The babies without allergies were more likely to have been on a diet that was rich in healthy foods including fruits, vegetables, poultry, fish, and homemade foods without much processed foods like pre-made meals and potato chips.

Eczema linked to food allergies: Study

(NaturalNews) Although it's been well established that eczema and allergic skin disorders involve food allergies, a UK research team from King's College London did some research to determine the role of the skin's immunity.

They determined that skin barrier defects, such as eczema itself, determine and even cause food allergies instead of food allergies causing skin barrier defects.

By skin testing after screening for genes considered conducive for eczema outbreaks, they determined that impaired skin barrier infants were six times more likely to be sensitive to eggs, cow's milk, and peanuts than healthy infants, regardless of genetic predisposition.

Since the infants had not been fed solids yet and were all breast-fed, which is considered ideal for conferring infant immunity, they suggested that immune cells in the skin, not the gut, play a crucial role with food sensitivities. [1]

Marijuana stops child's severe seizures

By most standards Matt and Paige Figi were living the American dream. They met at Colorado State University, where they shared a love of the outdoors. After getting married, the couple bought a house and planned to travel the world.
They did travel, but their plans changed when their first child was born in 2004.

PepsiCo to no longer call Naked juices 'natural'


NEW YORK (AP) -- PepsiCo Inc. said it will no longer label its Naked juices as being "all natural," after a lawsuit complained that the drinks contain ingredients that don't fit that bill.
The company, based in Purchase, N.Y., also agreed to pay $9 million to settle the lawsuit.
In an emailed statement, the company said it uses an "added boost of vitamins" in some of the drinks. But a lawsuit filed against the company noted that the vitamins are actually synthetic ingredients, including a fiber made by Archer Daniels Midland.
PepsiCo did not respond when asked whether those synthetic fibers are in fact included in the juices. The company's statement said it will drop the use of the word "natural" until there is more regulatory guidance around the world.
A hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Monday and has not yet been approved by a judge, noted Shirish Gupta, an attorney who's representing a plaintiff in one of the lawsuits filed against PepsiCo's Naked juices.

Published in the journal Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, the report argues that artificially sweetened beverages are not only linked with ill health effects similar to those associated with consuming regular soda – but they may even cause worse long term health outcomes.

“In lots of ways, (artificial sweeteners) have been given the benefit of the doubt just because they don’t have any calories,” lead author Susan Swithers, of the department of psychological sciences and ingestive behavior research center at Purdue University, told FoxNews.com.

About half of all drug trials aren’t made publicly available, and positive findings are twice as likely to be published as negative findings for the same drug. Since doctors can access only a small portion of the full scientific picture, they are led to believe that drugs are much safer or more effective than they actually are. For example, one independent study looked at all drug trials submitted to the FDA for twelve antidepressants. Thirty-eight of the trials showed positive results, while thirty-six showed negative results. Yet thirty-seven of the positive results were published in peer-reviewed journals, while only three of the negative studies were! Any doctor looking at the published studies would be led to believe that antidepressants were overwhelmingly effective. Did you ever wonder why everything seems to be bad for you, and almost everything seems to be good for you as well? This is a result of researching illness and ignoring healthiness. Illnesses are ‘specific’. Healthiness is general. Lessons learned by studying illness are poor teachers when trying to attain healthiness.

Prescription Drugs Now Kill More People In The US Than Heroin And Cocaine Combined

Prescription opioid painkillers are responsible for more fatal overdoses in the U.S. than heroin and cocaine combined, according to a new study out of Brandeis University.
Opioid painkillers include prescription narcotics such as like Vicodin (hydrocodone), OxyContin (oxycodone), Opana (oxymorphone) and methodone.
"An epidemic of prescription drug abuse is devastating American families and draining state and federal time, money and manpower," Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said in a press release.
The authors recommended that prescription drug monitoring programs "shift from a reactive to a proactive approach" by actions such as collecting prescribing data for all controlled substances, sending alerts about possible abuse to physicians and pharmacists, analyzing trend data to help law enforcement agencies identify "pill mills" that illicitly distribute prescription painkillers.

''The profits involved are just too large and the temptation to manipulate the evidence is difficult to resist, even when this may lead to the loss of lives,'' Dr Stamatakis said.
''Asking corporate sponsors to conduct pivotal trials on their own products is like asking a painter to judge their own painting to receive an award.''
